School Health Profiles Release
The Division of Adolescent and School Health has just released the 2010 School Health Profiles (Profiles) survey results summarized in the School Health Profiles 2010: Characteristics of Health Programs Among Secondary Schools in Selected U.S. Sites report. The report presents data from 49 states, 19 large urban school districts, 5 territories, and 2 tribal governments. Profiles results include the percentage of secondary schools that taught specific topics related to HIV/STD/pregnancy prevention in a required course and the percentage that have established safe and supportive environments for LGBTQ students. Other topics include tobacco-use prevention and school nutrition policies.
Proposed Decision Memo for Sexually Transmitted Infection Screening
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has issued a memo stating that there is enough evidence to conclude that screening for chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, and hepatitis B, as well as high-intensity behavioral counseling to prevent sexually transmitted infections (consistent with the grade A and B recommendations by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force), are reasonable and necessary for the prevention or early detection of an illness or disability. The CMS has also proposed that these screenings and counseling will be covered for individuals entitled to benefits under Part A or enrolled under Part B, when covered by the primary care provider and performed by an eligible Medicare provider. CDC developed and designed the Partner Services Providers (PSP) Quick Guide to provide guidance on integrated delivery of partner services at the client level. The Guide provides frequently used information about STDs, HIV, TB, and viral hepatitis in one convenient resource and is intended to assist disease intervention specialists, public health nurses, and others in providing effective STD and HIV partner services. The Guide includes CDC’s 2008 integrated HIV and STD partner services recommendations and encourages program collaboration.
